The lower house of Russia’s parliament on Tuesday approved legislation increasing the punishment for treason to life imprisonment and boosting the penalty for terrorism. The legislation, which advances to the parliament’s upper house, represents an escalation of the Kremlin’s domestic crackdown. Human rights advocates say charges of treason and terrorism are sometimes used against political critics and opponents. Another aspect of the crackdown reported Tuesday was an allegation of violence brought against imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The State Duma sent for further approval a proposal to increase the punishment for treason to life imprisonment from the current maximum of 20 years. Punishment for terrorism would be increased from 15 to 20 years in prison. Specifically for international terrorism, punishment will be from 12 years to life imprisonment, up from its current penalty of 10 to 20 years. JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi sheriff says in a new court filing that there’s no point in serving an arrest warrant on a white woman in the 1955 kidnapping that led to the lynching of Black teenager Emmett Till because last year a grand jury decided not to indict the woman.Till’s kidnapping and killing became a catalyst for the civil rights movement when his mother insisted on an open-casket funeral in their hometown of Chicago after his brutalized body was pulled from a river in Mississippi. Jet magazine published photos. The Mississippi arrest warrant for “Mrs. Roy Bryant” was issued shortly after Till’s death but was never served on the white woman who has since remarried and is now known as Carolyn Bryant Donham.Last June, a team doing research at the courthouse in Leflore County, Mississippi, found the unserved warrant. In July, the office of Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch said there was no new evidence to pursue a criminal case against Donham. I...7 soldiers hurt in military vehicle pile-up in Germany

DENVER (KDVR) — Downtown Denver, like most urban areas across the country, can be a tough place to find parking when visiting which leads many people to turn to the 224 licensed privately operated garages and lots in the city. But, according to the Denver Department of Excise and Licenses (EXL), these lots have created problems for people reporting a lack of transparency and excessive fees. When does street sweeping start in Denver? Because these lots are private, any disputes are considered civil matters between the vehicle owner and the lot operator and there should already be signs posted with contact information for the owner.Additionally, people with more specific issues or those who believe the lot is not following the law can file a complaint through the Colorado Attorney General's Consumer Protection Unit.Beginning on June 12, however, EXL is going to require new signage to be posted at these lots to help people avoid and respond to fees. This list was shared with ...Latest news
