After apology and acquittal in similar case, East Bay man avoids jail for sex trafficking of a minor in 2006 OAKLAND — A year after he was acquitted of allegations of sex trafficking from 2019, a Bay Area man avoided additional jail time for trafficking a minor who came to Oakland from Kentucky in 2006, court records show.Chase McMillon, 39, was sentenced Feb. 28 to time served, meaning he won’t go back to prison or jail for a conviction of sex trafficking a minor. McMillon pleaded guilty in October 2022 to trafficking a 15-year-old girl back in 2006, allegations that surfaced while authorities were investigating him for alleged sex trafficking in 2019, in Salinas. It is a bizarre case that was litigated for years, and resulted in McMillon spending roughly 18 months behind bars awaiting trial, before he was released in April 2022. McMillon was indicted in 2020 on charges of trafficking a woman in Salinas through threats and fisticuffs, but the case fell apart. In March 2022, he was acquitted of both charges. That left the more serious charge, alleging that McMillon trafficked a 1...

Biden Moves Forward With Mining Project That Will Obliterate a Sacred Apache Religious Site Biden administration attorneys were in court this week to defend a mining project that will obliterate one of the most sacred Apache religious sites in the American Southwest. In oral arguments Tuesday, the U.S. Forest Service said it was nearing completion of an environmental impact study that will transfer land east of Phoenix, to two of the world’s largest mining companies for the purpose of building of one of the largest copper mines on the planet. The massive project will hinge on the destruction of Chi’chil Biłdagoteel, a mountain otherwise known as Oak Flat, that is sacred to many Native American tribes, particularly the San Carlos Apache, who consider the area among their most holy of sites. In a nearly two-hour hearing, an 11-judge panel on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena, California, peppered lawyers on both sides of the high-stakes legal fight with an array of complex case law questions raised by the project. Begun nearly two decades ago, the battle f...

Fury-Usyk fight unlikely as rematch terms scupper deal The proposed fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk to become the first undisputed world heavyweight champion since 2000 appeared to be off Wednesday, with the boxers seemingly unable to agree to rematch terms.Usyk’s promoter, Alex Krassyuk, told British broadcaster talkSPORT that his fighter broke off negotiations with Fury because his rival was “putting so many obstacles in front of making the deal.”Frank Warren, Fury’s British promoter, responded by saying the big stumbling block centered around a dispute over the split of earnings from a rematch.Warren said he hoped negotiations can resume but time was running out for a deal to be reached for what would be one of the biggest fights in a generation. The last heavyweight to be the undisputed world champion was Lennox Lewis in 1999-2000.Usyk, the WBA, WBO and IBF champion, went on social media last week to accept Fury’s terms for a proposed April 29 fight in London, notably a 70-30 split of earnings from the bout in...

DC mayor’s ‘comeback’ budget adds traffic cameras, cuts bus routes D.C.’s mayor has unveiled her proposed budget for the next fiscal year.Billed as a “comeback plan,” in an appearance with the D.C. Council on Wednesday morning, the budget focuses on revitalizing downtown, adding hundreds more traffic cameras throughout the District and cutting the number of DC Circulator bus routes in half. Three routes are being eliminated and with them, possibly contractor personnel, as part of the city’s fiscal 2024 budget.Mayor Muriel Bowser told council members that the city’s finances are strong, but they must face reality — an estimated drop in revenue of more than $390 million due to the economic slump, expiring federal COVID funds and a lasting shift to telework of downtown workers.“Last month’s revenue estimates were a sobering reminder of how urgent the work is to bring back our downtown,” Bowser said. Her plan to counteract the loss of dollars generated by the 9 to 5 workforce not fully coming back to downt...

FAU doesn’t want the slipper, it wants March Madness crown NEW YORK (AP) — Florida Atlantic isn’t looking for a slipper to wear at the Sweet 16 dance in the East Region.Coach Dusty May and his ninth-seeded Owls don’t consider themselves a Cinderella team. FAU is 33-3 — a win total matched only by No. 1 seed Houston among the 16 teams still fighting for the national title.Forget that this Conference USA member is located among the trendy, white-sanded beaches of Boca Raton, Florida, and that the team plays what opponents consider a high school gym (it seats roughly 2,900). This is a good basketball team that will be taking on fourth-seeded Tennessee of the Southeastern Conference on Thursday evening at Madison Square Garden. May said people can say anything they want about Florida Atlantic.“We’re very, very confident in our abilities and those guys in the locker room,” he said Wednesday. “We’ve never thought of ourselves in that regard (Cinderella) just because of the success of our league and our guys being able to do what...
